Differences Between Single Chip LEDs and Triple Chips LEDs

LEDs with high light efficiency is used in many applications such as, general lighting, automotive lighting, traffic lights, camera flashes, screen lights and so on. The concept of single chip LED and triple chips LEDs are used frequently when the LED strips discussed.

LED strips created by mounting LEDs and resistors on a flexible circuit board. The size of the LEDs used and the number of diodes in it determine the name of the LED strip.

LED manufacturers produced LEDs according to the different requirements in various sizes. The numbers like 3014, 3528, 5050 and 5630 are used to determine the LEDs and specify the dimensions of LED packages. 3528 (3,5 mm x 2,8 mm) and 5050 (5,0 mm x 5,0 mm) are commonly used in strip LEDs. In 3528 LEDs single chip is used generally. In 5050 LEDs which have greater packages may contain triple chips.

It is possible to obtain bright light when used more than one diode in LED package. There is one single diode in single chip LEDs. There are three diodes in triple chips LEDs. Triple chips LEDs are brighter than single chip LEDs. That is the main difference between triple chip LEDs and single chip LEDs.

There is phosphor coating on white LEDs. So, it is not easy to see the number of diodes inside it. In colorful LEDs, the diodes can be seen as dot-shaped and it is easy to see the number of diodes inside.

The power consumption of triple chips LEDs are higher than the single chip LEDs. For this reason, a power source that have high current value must used to feed the triple chip LEDs.

Triple chips LEDs are expensive than the single chip LEDs. In this way, it is important to do the right choice according to the application. Triple chip LEDs should be preferred in strip LEDs and other LED products if high brightness light is needed. Single chip LEDs can be used in decorative lighting applications like hidden strip LEDs which does not need bright light.
