What is Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems?

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS)

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) are advanced technologies that enable real-time communication between vehicles, road infrastructure, pedestrians, and traffic control centers. This system, a cornerstone of smart cities, offers a far more comprehensive and interactive structure compared to traditional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

How Does C-ITS Work?

  •  On-Board Units (OBU)

These units, installed in vehicles, collect and share critical data such as position, speed, and braking status with both other vehicles and surrounding infrastructure. This continuous connectivity ensures dynamic interaction within traffic flow.

  • Roadside Units (RSU)

Mounted on traffic lights, signaling systems, and digital information panels, RSUs transmit data to both vehicles and central systems. For example, they can prioritize an approaching ambulance by turning traffic lights green or inform drivers of updated speed limits in real time.

  • Communication Technologies

C-ITS utilizes a variety of communication technologies such as DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications), 4G/5G networks, Wi-Fi, and satellite-based positioning systems. These enable vehicles to communicate securely with both nearby and broader networks.

  • Central Control System

All data is gathered and analyzed at a central platform. When necessary, AI-supported decision systems are activated to optimize traffic management. This includes emergency responses, traffic flow regulation, and autonomous vehicle routing.

Benefits of C-ITS

  • Reduction in Traffic Accidents

Real-time alerts between vehicles help detect potential collisions early and prevent accidents.

  • Smoother Traffic Flow

Coordinated movement between vehicles and infrastructure significantly reduces traffic congestion.

  • Fuel Efficiency and Lower Emissions

Applications like GLOSA (Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory) minimize unnecessary stops and starts, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

  • Infrastructure Ready for Autonomous Vehicles

C-ITS provides the seamless and secure communication infrastructure required by driverless vehicles, laying the foundation for future autonomous mobility.
